Dr. Oetker’s flagship UK factory in Leyland, Lancashire, has been operational since 1995.
Operational capacity and workforce numbers continue to expand in line with the growing market share for the factory’s household name frozen pizza ranges - Ristorante, Chicago Town Deep Dish and Chicago Town Takeaway.
There is also a test kitchen where new pizza products and recipes are developed for worldwide markets.
As part of its commitment to reduce its environmental impact and to continually invest in facilities, the site management team contacted HSG due to ongoing issues with washroom blockages, smells and excessive water usage.
Recognised last year with The Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Innovation, HSG’s Ureco system has been designed to reduce the amount of water flushing through washroom urinals to just 4 flushes per day.
This is done through the unique design of the product and a blend of natural bio enzymes to ‘eat away’ at waste product within the waste pipework. The Ureco also has other filters and a patented ‘odour lock’ system which controls odours within urinal pipework.
Ureco works alongside the Uretech water manager which incorporates many unique features that allow the user to adjust water consumption in urinals based on their business type and usage requirements.
After carrying out a detailed survey and full health and safety risk assessment in line with the strict regulations around food manufacturing - HSG has installed eight Ureco units, five water managers and two air sterile units in male washrooms across the site.
The factory operates round the clock so the HSG technical team ensured that installation did not adversely affect the workforce who require facilities to be available 24/7.
By adopting the Ureco system, Dr.Oetker has reduced daily water usage from 3,528 litres to just 160 litres.
This has saved nearly 1.3 tonnes of CO2 per year and resulted in an annual water cost saving of just over £3,000 as well as further savings in maintenance and blockage repairs.
Dr.Oetker’s environmental credentials will also be improved through the use of non-invasive biological cleaners.
The site facilities manager said: “This site continues to benefit from ongoing investment and it was important that every aspect of our facility continues to be scrutinised to reduce the environmental and cost impact.
“We are very satisfied with the results and the on-going service that we receive from HSG.”
